Description

What is Youth of the Year? – It is a high school writing, public speaking and mentoring program for youth involved with the Boys & Girls Club for at least two years.  It is also a competition where a Junior and Senior youth of the year are recognized.  The Junior winner receives a $500 scholarship towards career advancement and is the Club’s youth spokesperson during their senior year.  The Senior winner receives a $2,000 scholarship towards college or trade school, and represents the Club in the New Jersey youth of the year competition, and possible the Northeast/National competition in Washington DC.

When is the Youth of the Year Judging Taking Place? – Friday, 2/28 at our 1040 Spruce Street Center.

What are the tasks of Judges? – Judges have three job tasks.  First, review youth application and essays before the event, score them and send in results prior to the 2/28.  These will be sent to you prior to the event, and usually include 2-3 essays that are 1-2 pages long. Second, arrive at 1040 Spruce Street in Lawrence by 12 pm (exact time will be confirmed) for judging instruction.  You will interview 9 candidates, and then rate them on their responses and communication skills.  Lastly, you are asked to attend the Great Futures Dinner beginning at 6 pm at which each finalist will make a speech.   You will rate each finalist's presentation, and before the conclusion of the event the winner will be announced.

Who comes to the Great Futures dinner?  This is one of the Clubs fundraising events, so sponsors, donors, parents and community stakeholders are invited to attend.  We are expecting over 160 people in the audience.  RSVP to Sarah Julian at sjulian@bgcmercer.org
